Restoring the Sacred Architecture
Without ceremony to mark the passage, the crossing cannot be completed.
We remain paused at the threshold.”
The need to mark, stand in, and have our grief witnessed has an ancient lineage, but in the twentieth century in the West we began to exchange many ancestral mourning rituals for clinical expedience, steadily dismantling many of the sacred elements of the rites that once anchored our grief.
When I experienced a number of profound bereavements in close succession I learned first-hand why these ancient containers matter. One of my losses was private and a public ceremony was the last thing I wanted. For reasons beyond my control there was to be no funeral at all for another. I lived the suspended pain of a threshold going unmarked, and I learnt that while more recognisable modern farewells serve a vital purpose, they are not always possible, or suitable.
I wanted to understand why this felt so important and why it was causing me so much pain. This led me to the library, where I read about ancient ceremonial traditions and practices, depth psychology, and the architecture of grief. My research went on to cover ethnography, esotericism, classical symbolism, ancient folklore, and the study of van Gennep's threshold rites.
I began to understand that without ceremony to mark the passage, the passage cannot be completed. I would need to mark these crossings myself. Yet my search for a way to do that produced nothing that resonated.
And so I decided to create the tools I could not find. To restore the sacred architecture. Drawing on two decades as a writer, and in law, broadcasting and design, alongside training as an independent celebrant, I founded Ceremonies of Love®.
My practice is dedicated to authoring the frameworks. Guided Ceremony Sets for private, self-led farewell ceremonies at home. Bespoke ceremonial writing commissions through The Archive. And the exploration of lost rites, through immersive ceremonial theatre on The Stage.
My role is to bring literary depth, symbolic rigour, and enduring beauty to the liminal space. It is a privilege to author the sacred architecture for some of life’s most profound thresholds.
We cannot always choose the crossings, but with the right architecture, we can cross them on our own terms.

Inspired by personal experience. Created for you.
“We may not choose life’s painful thresholds, but we must somehow survive and cross through them.”
Searching for my own way to mark my loss, I turned to the scholarship of threshold rites, classic literature, historical floriography, and ceremonial architecture to create what was missing in that moment. I am grateful to now offer that to you.
